Homework 1- Production, Distribution & Marketing, Exhibition

Homework 1- Production, Distribution & Marketing, Exhibition

  1. Production
There are 3 stages of Production
  • Pre-Production
The first part of production is when all the planning takes places for the project. While pre-production, the production is split into separate scenes. The props, cast members, special effects, locations, costumes and visual effects are identified. A precise schedule is produced and arrangements are made for the necessary objectives and the cast to be available to the film-makers when needed.
  • Production
The second stage of the main production part is where all the filming is carried out. As all the scenes are planned out during pre-production they are filmed at the relevant locations. Every scene is scrutinized by the director and filmed many times as soon as he/she deems fit. This is because they want to ensure the best quality scenes will be used to construct the film. This part of the production tests the strength of the pre-production work as it is vital everything should be in place when filming takes place.
  • Post-Production
The final part of production is post-production. This part is when the film is assembled by the editor. The first job of the film editor is to go through the scenes and roughly build the shots together. Also the editor only selects the best shots. Next, the editor tries to create a smooth cut by getting all the shoots to flow sweetly in a seamless story.  After, the editor carries out the trimming phase the process of shortening scenes by a couple of minutes, seconds or even a few frames. In addition, not only editing the footage, music, graphics, menus etc are all added in this stage. After all the editing has been done and a fine cut has been screened and approved by the director and producer, the picture is 'locked' (No changes can be made)

   2.  Distributing & Marketing

·         Distribution

There are many ways of distributing films for example for big companies to distribute their films is far easier than Independent filmmakers. Big companies distribute their films by leasing out their film and the distributor agrees to pay a fixed amount for the rights to distribute the film. Most major studios have their own distribution companies, such as Disney owns Buena Vista a major film distributor.

So the backing of a major studio/distributor or a well known director or star can greatly improve the chances of securing a great distribution deal. This will lead to the film to be greatly advertised and distributed in many places. Films are distributed to cinemas, online multi platform websites, DVDs, TV’s etc.

·         Marketing

Film companies market their films in various ways for example,

Trailers are a great way to market a film as because like you can see from the above trailer they are full of action and are really tensed for the audience. This builds up the suspense and makes the audiences want to engage with the film by watching the entire film.

Also, the film is marketed by other media mediums such as TV shows, radio, magazines, Internet. In addition, films are marketed by non media e.g. promotion/publicity, creative services.

    3. Exhibition
Finally, the exhibition is how the audience get to see the film. There are many different mediums available to go and see a film. For example, Cinemas; 646 films were released in the UK in 2012. However not all films are released in Cinemas for example many independent films are shown on Film 4 and Film Festivals. Also many watch new and old films on online multi platforms such as, BBC iPlayer, Netflix and many others.
